A - Basic Needs of Living Things and WHY they need them:
1. Food: provides energy for movement and nutrition for growth, keep body temperature, chemical balance.
2. Water: keeps nutrients flowing through the body, sweat to maintain body temperature, excretion
3. Shelter: safety from predators and the environment, body temperature, sun exposure, a place to store extra food
4. Space: space provides adequate energy supply, (sunlight, air, water, food)
5. Air: provides fuel for breaking down food for energy (respiration, cellular)
2B - Role of Photosynthesis
*All living things need ENERGY from food to maintain homeostasis.
(Homeostasis: ability of a living organism to control its internal (inside) conditions in spite of a changing external (outside) environment)
*Energy originally comes from sun in the form of light.
*Photosynthesis: Plants absorb sunlight, Carbon Dioxide Gas, and water to produce glucose (sugar) in their leaves
*Energy is stored chemically in the form of sugar (called glucose)
*Plants are producers. They provide food for other organisms.
2C - Creating Diagrams to show the movement of energy
-Food Chains, Food Webs, Energy Pyramids all show how energy flows from one living thing to another.
-Arrows point in the direction the energy is flowing.
-First source of energy is the sun, then plants, then animals
